Our birthdays are 5 days apart in the month of January. Last year in January Jaime wanted to see Prince in concert. We saw that there was a tour date between our birthdays in New York City at Madison Square Garden. Jaime was especially passionate about seeing him, in that there were going to be very limited performance dates for that tour.
We flirted with the idea by seeing if any tickets were available. The website said the show was sold out. We had given up all hope. Jaime checked the website again days later, for whatever reason, to find that two tickets had opened up. Jaime was ecstatic! The tickets however were very expensive. We talked about it and decided that it was an opportunity of a lifetime that we could not let pass. Most importantly, Jaime was so desirous of seeing this show. I had never seen her so excited about an event. So her happiness would be worth it all.
We had talked about getting married. The expectancy of a proposal would have been some time by or around Valentine's Day. We had already looked at rings and I had a general idea of what she wanted. Once we got tickets for the Prince concert…. in New York,… at Madison Square Garden,…on our birthdays; I knew it would not get any better than this to propose. I envisioned proposing to her while Prince serenaded us with his "Adore".
Could I make this happen? We would be going to New York in less than a week. I didn’t have a ring. Where would I get one? I didn’t have all of the answers just then (like Jaime would have wanted to if she was going to do something LOL), but I knew somehow I was going to make it happen.
I took a page from my beloved internet shopping queen and searched online for a place in New York. To my surprise, I learned that we were actually going to the right city if one wanted find a ring and a diamond. I learned about New York's diamond district. I took a crash course in engagement rings. To make the feat of finding a ring even more complicated, I knew that Jaime liked a rare rose gold antique look. I believed that I called or searched almost every jewelry store in Manhattan. LOL! Finally, I found the ring and the diamond. I had them rush the order for pick up in New York once I arrived.
I then went and asked Jaime's parents for their blessings. I also went and talked with her godfather as well. With their approval, I was now set!
After arriving in New York we visited the Museum of Modern Art and it's gift store. Jaime had found a lucite ring. I bought it as a gag gift. Later on I told her that I was going to visit my line brother who lived in New York. All the while I was picking up her real ring.
We met back up at the Jimmy Fallon show and had a great time. I had placed the lucite gag ring in an extra ring box I got from the jeweler. Once at the show, I pulled it out and asked her to marry me during the taping of the show. She said yes. I told her to wear the gag ring as a placeholder until I could get a ring sometime around Valentine’s Day. We had a great time.
After the show, we whisked off to see Prince at MSG. Once we got to our seats, I told Jaime that I was going to talk to the usher to see if we could dance down front when Prince sang “Adore”. I told the ushers my plan and they gave me permission. Prince put on a great show. Everybody who was somebody in New York was there that night. Prince had seemed to have sung all of his songs without singing “Adore”. Plus, he had faked the crowd out now twice. I was worried I would not get my opportunity I had worked so hard for. How could my man Prince let me down?
Then it happened. He began to sing “Adore”. I led Jaime down on the floor of that section of MSG. We danced close then I broke away and got down one knee. (Like I was in an old Kappa step show. LOL) I pulled out the real ring box and opened it up. Jaime was shocked!!! Everybody in that section applauded. When I turned to look at the crowd I saw a familiar face 5 feet away from me in the second row. He gave me the thumbs up. It was Donald Trump! I then knew I had pulled off a proposal of a lifetime.
